Frequently Asked Questions

What makes PCandMe™ better than requiring a credit card or driver’s license before contacting underage users?

The most important thing about a solution to protect kids online is that it gets used. Requiring a parent’s credit card or driver’s license for underage users is inconvenient, encourages unsafe workarounds, and drives underage users away. PCandMe™ uses the one thing that every online user of any age has right in front of them: their connected computer. Registering your computer with PCandMe™ is a simple one-time, one minute process. Users can register an unlimited number of computers so they have access wherever and whenever they want it.

I use several different computers. Can I register more than one computer with PCandMe™ for my account?

Yep. Just log in to your social networking site from the new computer and request PCandMe™ registration. An email will be immediately sent to you containing a link to the PCandMe™ registration site. After clicking the link and completing registration, the new computer will be securely registered to your account.

How does PCandMe™ prevent sexual predators from talking to my kids on social networking sites?

Social networking sites can readily terminate a user account for inappropriate behavior. However, it is very easy for such users to come right back on the site under a new username and profile. With PCandMe™, users are securely linked to a common and unavoidable denominator – the computer they are using. Malicious users, no matter what pseudonym, social network or account they are operating under, can be uniquely and universally identified by the computers they use - and denied access.

Does PCandMe™ use any personally identifiable information about me?

Nope. PCandMe™ uses device recognition to create a unique signature for each computer. This signature is analogous to the license plate on your car, a unique identifier containing no information whatsoever about you – but which can be linked to you at your option by an organization you want to belong to.

Can’t a malicious user just change a component on their machine to make it look like a different computer to PCandMe™, and then come back online as someone else?

Nope. PCandMe™ uses “physical device recognition” developed by Uniloc to distinguish one computer from another. This extremely advanced technology samples a wide range of physical components on a computer in order to create its unique device signature. By sampling so many components, this technology can allow a significant number of components to be replaced or added and still recognize a computer as the same one.
